Adjara is situated in the southwest part of Georgia on the Black Sea. Population is more than 400,000 and the administrative centre is Batumi, which has a population of more than 137,000. The length of the Adjara coastal line is 54km.There are a number of resorts including; Kobuleti, Tsikhisdziri, Green Cape, Makhinjauri, Batumi and pleasure resorts such as: Phichvnari, Bobokvati, Chakvi, Gonio, Kvariati and Sarpi. Batumi is one of the oldest towns in Georgia. It is situated on the coast of the Black Sea shore of Batumi Bay. There are many interesting places and sights:
• The State Drama Theatre named after Ilia Chavchvadze (the famous Georgian writer);
• Seaside Park - built in 1883 by the famous gardeners Rolsen, D’alfons and Gordeziani. The whole territory is 60 hectares. There are Greek colonnades, coloured musical fountains, a tennis court, cafes and bars.;
• St. Maria’s Cathedral - built in 1902. It was specifically sanctified by Roman Bishop Edward Romp;
• Adjarian Art Museum;
• Adjarian State Museum with 1,800 exhibits (flora, fauna and minerals). Archaeology collections, rare ethnographical finds, unique photos, samples of art, writings and documents;
• Botanical Gardens of Batumi, 9km from the centre of town. It consists of 9 phytogeographycal parts and two parks. There are more than 4,000 kinds of tree and bush from all continents of the world;
• Gonio-Aphsaros Castle, situated in the south of Batumi, 12km from the town. The total length of the castle is 222mtr. There are 22 towers and four entry points. |
