History
The history of Ceuta has always faced the sea. Phoenicians, Greeks, Cartaghians, Romans, Muslims and Portuguese, either passed by or settle in the city to take the control over the straight of Gibraltar, which is the key to two seas, and the gate to two continents, the European and the African continent. The Romans settled in Ceuta during the 3th and 4th century and built a dry fish and garum factory that distributed the products to the whole Roman Empire. Ceuta was ruled by different Muslim dinasties, fatimíes, hamudíes, meriníes, an even omeyas settled here. The 21st August 1415, Don Juan I of Portugal conquered Ceuta in just one day, turning Ceuta into a Portuguese colony. In the year 1640 Ceuta wanted to be part of Spain, and this was made official through the treaty of Lisbon, signed in 1668.
