History
Napoli, the capital of Regione Campania in southern Italy, is a city of art with a population of about one million. It boasts a scenic location, bordered by Mount Vesuvius, the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida, and Capo Miseno. Its origins trace back to the ninth century BC when Anatolian and Achaean merchants founded Partenope on the small island of Megaride. Later, the inhabitants of Cuma established Neapolis as a new city in the eastern part of the area. Neapolis was planned in a Hippodomean layout with orthogonal streets, which can still be observed in the modern city.
