About our destination (Alexandria)
Known as the largest seaport and second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is full of intriguing and stimulating attractions to explore. Also known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, Alexandria was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. Alexandria served as the capital of Egypt for nearly a thousand years until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641.
Today, Alexandria is divided into six districts, offering visitors a wide range of attractions and activities.
Although little remains of the ancient city, be sure to visit the famous catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa and the underwater ruins of Montazah and Maamoura, both of which offer a glimpse into the region’s history.
The cuisine of the region is also a must-try on every cruise to Alexandria, with everything from Egyptian to different types of Middle Eastern dishes.
Here are some of our favorite things to do while sailing to the Egyptian port city of Alexandria: Spend a lazy day at one of the city’s historic cafés, or grab your camera and take advantage of the great photo opportunities around.
See the exhibits at the National Museum of Alexandria, which cover the history of Alexandria from ancient to modern times!
