Port of Huelva: Port of Christopher Columbus… Port of Discovery

In the west coast of Andalusia, next to the Strait of Gibraltar, the Port of Huelva is located at the most important crossroads of the North-South and East-West maritime routes which means the opportunity of being visited by cruise ships whose routes are through the South Mediterranean, North Africa and North Europe-Canary Islands as well as seasonal change between the Caribbean and Europe. The Port of Huelva is situated less than one hour to the monumental city of Seville and the Portuguese Algarve.

Huelva is one of the most natural province in Spain, with protected areas of ecological value – Reserves of Biosphere- as Doñana National Park and Odiel Marshes Natural Reserve.

The most remarkable event in the history of the city took place in 1492 when three caravels under the command of Christopher Columbus departed from the Port to discover the called New World. This point of departure in addition to the Columbus Monument, the Franciscan Monastery of La Rábida and the very famous Caravels Dock –where replicates of the caravels can be visited- are adjoining the Port area and very easy to access.

‘Huelva: Gastronomy Capital of Spain 2017’
This year, there is a great excuse for cruise lines to change their itineraries and come to visit our port: Huelva has been elected Gastronomy Capital of Spain 2017, in an intense competition with the most remarkable cities in the culinary sector of our country.

Finally, Huelva won the contest. These are the main reasons:
1.       Its Famous Jamón, award-winning and renowned for its excellent quality.
2.       Its extraordinary shellfish, especially the famous white prawn.
3.       Its delicious strawberries, extremely valued in Europe.
4.       Its tasty and autochthonous Wines of The Condado.
5.       Because it is the 525th Anniversary of Columbus’ Voyage to America.

In a visit to Huelva it is essential to taste the fresh fish of the coast, whether grilled, baked, grilled, marinated, fried … Among them is choco, a kind of sepia very appreciated in Huelva. Cannot miss either octopus, sole, tunas, anchovies, sardines, mackerel and monkfish, prepared according to traditional and delicious recipes.

Seafood and shellfish are another remarkable products of Huelva’s gastronomy. The white prawn of Huelva is a delicacy admired throughout the country. While the crayfish, king prawns, ‘coquinas’, clams and canned fish like Isla Cristina’s mojama are a real pleasure for the senses.

From the interior of the province also come products very coveted not only in the region, but in the whole world. Jamón de Bellota, with Denomination of Origin, is just one example. But the Iberian pig takes advantage of everything, from its meat, ideal to be cooked on the grill, to the wide range of derivatives, such as sausages, chorizo, creams… The Andévalo is also a hunting ground for partridges, deers, wild boars and quail. And land of magnificent lamb and veal.

And we cannot just talk about meat. The mycological richness of the north and west of the province is unlimited, with unique species such as the gurumelo. Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries) reach all of Europe and are an important economic engine. The extra virgin olive oil from Huelva is a guarantee of quality. And the County wines and vinegars are the perfect accompaniment to irrigate the rest of the products of a rich, diverse and balanced gastronomy.

Eating in Huelva is quite an experience. And dozens of bars and restaurants can be found throughout the city, where you can taste unparalleled products, cooked by both traditional and innovative ways. Reasons are not missing so that, throughout the year 2017, Huelva is the Spanish capital of Gastronomy.

During 2016 we received the visit of MS Koningsdam (297 m. L.O.A., 2,650 passengers and 8 m draft). Being a successful experience, the Port of Huelva has decided to take a chance on big cruise ships and make a unique offer among all the surrounding ports by providing the best and easiest access to the city of Seville, as well as the magnificient tourist destinations of the province of Huelva (Doñana Natural Park, Riotinto Mines, the Columbus Route…) and the Portuguese Algarve, all in the same call.
