MedCruise actively participated at the “First Sustainable Management and Participatory Governance of Cruise Destinations School” organised by the Research in Shipping and Ports (RESHIP) Laboratory of the University of the Aegean in 4-8 June in Santorini Greece.

On behalf of MedCruise Mrs. Aimilia Papachristou attended the last days of the summer school where she presented the existing waste reception facilities in MedCruise Ports while she pointed out the importance of Environmental Management for cruise ports. She also highlighted that the development of the European cruise industry is a key pillar of the Blue Growth strategy and that in collaboration with cruise lines Medcruise port members in the Med and its adjoining seas are actively promoting the sustainable practice and profile of cruise activities.

The MedCruise presentation was based on data collected as part of the participation of the MedCruise Association at the LIFE+ Sustainable Cruise project.

The programme was attended by more than 30 participants stakeholders and social partners and during the two days of the school were discussed:

– the development of the regional/national cruise sector that has become priority for many destinations and the term attractiveness is high in policy makers’ agenda

– the competition between conventional tourism and cruise tourism since both tourists and cruise passengers antagonize for the same services and facilities.

– the environmental effects of cruise activity
