The Port of Funchal is experiencing a growing trend: an increasing number of cruise ships are making overnight stays. This surge aligns with the expectations of the Madeira Port Administration (APRAM, SA) and is projected to reach 73 overnight stays by the end of the year.
Last year, the final two months saw 14 overnight stays. This year, by the first week of December, that number had already been matched. Including the additional stays scheduled until December 31, the total will reach 34 overnight stops.
“For us, at the Port of Funchal, this is a strategic priority—not only in terms of revenue, as overnights generate more fees, but also in promoting the destination itself,” explained Paula Cabaço, Chair of APRAM’s Board of Directors. She emphasized the benefits these overnight stays bring to the city, such as a stronger economic impact and increased engagement with the local community.
According to shipowners, about 80% of passengers and crew from overnighting cruise ships go out at night to explore and enjoy the city. This results in a “greater impact on the local economy,” as passengers and crew have more time to discover what Funchal has to offer. “This translates into greater benefits for sectors like dining, retail, and cultural and leisure activities,” noted Cabaço. She added, “The longer stays encourage deeper connections with the city, strengthening the bond between the port and the community.”
Cabaço highlighted that both the port infrastructure and APRAM’s human resources are well-equipped to meet this market trend, which they aim to further enhance. Next year, APRAM plans to intensify its promotional efforts with cruise companies, showcasing Madeira’s main attractions and the variety of its offerings. “The short distance between the port and the city is undoubtedly a key factor in encouraging cruise lines to extend their stay in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city by night,” concluded Paula Cabaço.
In late November, the Port of Funchal received the award for Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability from the World Cruise Awards. In the previous two years, 2022 and 2023, Madeira had already been recognized by the so-called ‘Cruise Oscars’ as Europe’s Best Cruise Destination.
In 2023, Madeira welcomed 279 cruise ship calls and, for the first time, surpassed 624,000 disembarked passengers—a 51% increase compared to 2022. This year, those figures are expected to be exceeded again in a market with a direct economic impact of over €53 million on the regional economy.
