The largest residential and exclusive yacht in the world visited Tarragona during the weekend.

Tarragona Cruise Port Costa Daurada has become a premium cruise destination. An example of this reality is the two-day stay that the biggest residential and exclusive yacht in the world has just made in Tarragona, The World, a true floating city that sails throughout the year with 160 families on board. All being the owners of the different luxury rooms travelling around the world without leaving home.

This community on the sea was born in 2002 and has visited more than 900 ports in over 140 countries. The itinerary is designed by the captains and the residents and is intended to cover the entire planet in a maximum period of three years. Unlike most ships, The World spends more time at port than on the high seas.

By the end of the year 2016, this private yacht will have sailed nearly 40,000 miles, visiting more than 100 ports and stopping in more than 40 countries and Tarragona has been one of the chosen destinations. This year the residents of The World will also visit exclusive locations like the Antarctica, South Georgia, the Maldives or the carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

The World has 165 luxury residences on board with spaces ranging from 100 to 400 square metres. The interiors of the residences are customized according to the individual tastes of the residents.

The best cruise season

Tarragona Cruise Port Costa Daurada is reaping the fruits of the strategy initiated four years ago and has established itself as a unique destination for international cruises in the Mediterranean. The predictions for this season are to receive 22 cruises in the facilities of the Port of Tarragona, the double of last year, and so far it has been the best cruise season. During the month of August the Port of Tarragona will receive five cruises.

The birth of “The World”

“The World” was originated with the aim to ensure that guests would never have to return to shore. A new model of travelling that allows sailing during the desired time from the comfort of your own private residence. So, in 1997, a team of professionals began working on the first boat in which people could travel the world without leaving home. The construction of the ship began in May 2000 in Rissa, Norway, and in March 2002 it was put to sea in Oslo, full of inaugural residents on board. On 30 September 2003 the residents bought the boat, and in June 2006, the original inventory of residences was complete.
