The meeting of the Thessaloniki Port Users’ Council was held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, via videoconference, in the presence of the Executive Chairman of the BoD of ThPA S.A., Athanasios Liagkos, and the CEO of ThPA S.A., Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, with the participation of nineteen representatives from seventeen bodies, and company partners and executives.
During the meeting, the wider port community got informed about all key developments related to ThPA S.A. and the Port of Thessaloniki, and exchanged views on important matters.
The meeting focused on the recent approval of the port’s development Master Plan through a relevant Presidential Decree. It was emphasized that this is a particularly significant milestone, as ThPA S.A. is able to fully implement its development and investment plan, in which the flagship Pier 6 expansion project plays a central role.
The expansion of Pier 6, an investment worth hundreds of millions of euro, is set to proceed immediately, in the coming months, pending the issuance of the necessary permits. In this context, it was underlined that the implementation of the project, along with the necessary completion of the port’s rail and road connectivity projects by the Greek state, will further enhance its competitiveness and commercial activity, significantly upgrading its global position. Moreover, additional key investments will commence, including the restoration and utilization of the Old Customs Station Building, along with projects aimed at upgrading the existing infrastructure of the Port of Thessaloniki.
Additionally, the meeting included discussions on the further development of cruise sector. It was noted that 2024 was another year of double-digit percentage growth in the sector, with equally strong prospects for 2025 and the following years. For 2025, 72 arrivals are already scheduled, featuring 21 cruise ships of 14 leading cruise companies. ThPA S.A. executives also highlighted the investment plan in infrastructure and mechanical equipment at the conventional port, which saw a significant increase in cargo in 2024 and handled a range of project cargoes. At the same time, the further development of the non-core port activities was highlighted, through actions such as the recent sub-concession agreement for the use of spaces for the accommodation of the services of the Thessaloniki Court of Appeal, co-signed by ThPA S.A., Dimera Land & Property Investments Ltd. and the Hellenic Republic (specifically the Ministry of Justice).
The meeting additionally focused on the environmental initiatives of ThPA S.A., such as the pilot ship emissions monitoring, and the recent security inspection at the Port of Thessaloniki by a delegation of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE). Finally, emphasis was placed on initiatives to enhance the international outlook and cooperation, such as the hosting of the 21st European Sea Ports Organisation Conference (ESPO Conference) by ThPA S.A. in Thessaloniki on May 8 and 9, 2025, as well as the company’s participation in important international and local exhibitions.
It is important to highlight that the meetings of the Thessaloniki Port Users’ Council provide a platform for productive dialogue among the port community members on issues of mutual interest, always with a view to upgrading the Port’s services to its users and optimal cooperation.
