Odesa’s name origin is debated, but it’s thought to be from the ancient Greek city-state “Odesos.” Though this city-state is actually in Varna, Bulgaria, in 2008, an ancient Greek city called Istrian Harbour was discovered at Primorsky Boulevard. The region was under various empires and Khanates throughout history, and in 1792, the city of Odesa was founded, becoming the third-largest city in the Russian Empire. Odesa is home to representatives of over 100 nationalities, and its famous attractions include the Potemkin Stairs, catacombs, and the Opera and Ballet Theater. Famous Odesans include musicians David Oistrakh and Svyatoslav Richter, athlete Vladimir Zhabotinsky, and Sidney Reilly, the model for James Bond.
